One of the modernizations made possible by the new Constitution, as adopted in Rome in July 2003, was the establishing of the Scientific Committee. This committee has to assist the Board in performing its task, defined in article 14.5 of the Constitution as "to ensure the continuity of the Federation's activities by analyzing the current situation and creating on the basis of that situation and of foreseeable economic, sociological and technological changes a strategy for the years to come".

The main tasks of the Committee are, therefore, to explore scientific and technological developments in the domains of activity of the Federation, to make proposals on that basis to the Board and to assist the organizers of an Intersteno Congress in setting up a programme for the conferences.

In Rome were nominated as members of the committee for a period of four years Mr. Gian Paolo Trivulzio (I), Mr. Boris Neubauer (D), Mr. Jaroslav Zaviacic,(CZ) Mr. Jorge Alberto Bravo (Ar) and Mr. Cees van Beurden (NL). Mr. Van Beurden was assigned as coordinator of the committee and in that capacity as member of the Board.  Subject to the approval of the Board the committee can attract other specialists for help and advise.

The committe has studied and is studying a number of projects, such as:

  • to collect information about programmes and methods, e-learning included, for learning the keyboard effectively;
  • to collect information about new keyboards that have been developed;
  • to promote the Internet keyboarding competition of Intersteno;
  • to study possible changes in the future of the rules for the world championships in keyboarding and shorthand;
  • to draw up a list of words and definitions in a number of languages for common use in all Intersteno publications;
  • to study the development of speech recognition and the role speech recognition can play in the domains of activity of Intersteno;
  • to study if the growing need for subtitling can become a domain of activity of Intersteno and in this regard, if cooperation with the MUSA-project of the EU is possible;
  • to investigate updates of software programmes and new software programmes in the fields of activity of Intersteno and to ask members of Intersteno what there experiences with these programmes are;
  • to investigate the opinion of members of Intersteno about the advantages and disadvantages of Linux as an operating system versus Windows;
  • to find a way to publish objective announcements about innovations (hardware and software) in Intersteno e-news
